But the typical for it hazy, nostalgic pictures are not essential in his works. The cycle "Street Patrol" shows contemporary heroes and heroines. They are a sort of hydrides: their bodies made up of a combination of human elements with those of animals make one think of toys for children. The placing of them in the naturalistic scenery of Polish towns, with wit, irony and a touch of nostalgia reveals a paradoxical coexistence of the colorful ludistic pop-culture with the "sorrowful" reality. And just this nostalgic quality in Artur Chrzanowski`s works seems to me very important indeed because it places his works within the wave of postmodernist art. The reference to childhood indicates here one of the characteristic features of contemporary culture, one propagating the ideals of constant entertainment, of carnival going together with a cult of immaturity touched frequently with a feeling of nostalgia. In this respect Chrzanowski`s work seems to be exceptional in Polish art. There are few artists who in describing the mutual penetration of pop-culture and daily life can do it in such a light-hearted, witty and ironical way and at the same time so shrewdly. “A Postmodernist Nostalgia” by Magdalena Ignaczak, ”EXIT – New Art in Poland”, Quaterly No. 1(45) galeria prac: prace audio-video:
